Common Problems Patients Experience with CPAP Therapy

CPAP therapy has been a common solution for sleep apnea, but it’s not the only one. Patients may complain to their dentists about poorly fitted masks, claustrophobia, or the noise the machine makes as they and their partners try to sleep. Continue reading as we analyze some common problems patients experience with CPAP therapy.
Bad Mask Fitting
Although CPAP therapy can be effective in many cases, some people have trouble with their masks. You need to make sure your mask fits properly so you can stay comfortable while you’re asleep. If the continuous pressure on your airway is uncomfortable or ineffective, then your sleep apnea therapy won’t help you the way it should. Let your dentist know if your CPAP mask doesn’t fit properly so you can have it resized and get the most out of your treatment.
Claustrophobia
If you get anxious when you’re in a confined space, you might be claustrophobic. Claustrophobia is a serious condition, especially when it’s in its more developed stages, and CPAP therapy can sometimes be an aggressor to the symptoms. If you suffer from claustrophobia and don’t think CPAP therapy is an adequate solution for your sleep apnea, you should talk to your dentist about alternative options.
Noisy Machine
Many people use CPAP machines to alleviate their sleep apnea symptoms for the sake of their partners who share a bed with them. Unfortunately, CPAP machines are sometimes loud enough that they’ll keep sleeping partners awake in the same way snoring will. Modern machines tend to be quieter, but don’t be afraid to ask your dentist about other options.
